It has appeared here before that West Virginia University regularly audits the Skypunch online voting system against the cybersecurity framework published by the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP). With great pleasure, it can today be announced that Marshall University, home to the Institute for Cyber Security and a partner in the National Center of Excellence for Cybersecurity in Critical Infrastructure will be joining in that effort.

This is a win for everyone involved as it provides an experiential learning opportunity for cybersecurity students to perform audit activity not against a lab environment, but against a real world website with the most stringent of security requirements. Upon completion, students will have something they can add to their resume to jump ahead of others in the job market, while at the same time Skypunch (and by extension, all Skypunch clients) gain from having even more cybersecurity audit activity performed on the site. Within the OWASP framework, there are around 300 or so audit controls. That is too many for any single team of auditors to tackle adequately over the course of a single semester. Therefore, a select set of controls are chosen for any given semester with the full set being cycled through over the course of multiple semesters. Bringing a totally new group of auditors into this program, means the full set of OWASP controls will be cycled through more frequently which is a very welcome thing.

Special thanks go out to the many people who worked behind-the-scenes at Marshall University to take from concept through to fruition. Everyone involved will be benefit from your efforts.
